Partly cloudy sky

NEW DELHI SEPT. 12. The weatherman has forecast a partly cloudy sky for the Capital on Monday with possibility of rain or thundershowers in some areas.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Sunday were 36.7 degrees Celsius and 26.8 degrees Celsius respectively, while at Palam it was 37.3 degrees Celsius and 26.7 degrees Celsius.

The maximum relative humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 75 per cent and 78 per cent respectively. The minimum relative humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 37 per cent and 42 per cent respectively.

Betting racket busted

NEW DELHI SEPT. 12. Three alleged bookies, who were running a racket in betting on the cricket match between India and Kenya, were arrested from Paschim Vihar in West Delhi by the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Neeraj Sehgal, Puneet Sharma and Brij Mohan. The police recovered four mobile phones, recorder, earphone, a television and account books from their possession. They said the accused had accepted the stake amount to the tune of Rs. 20 lakhs from punters.

Extortionists held

NEW DELHI SEPT. 12. Four persons, who were allegedly trying to extort Rs. 6 lakhs from a businessman, have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police.

According to the police, the businessman, Abhilash Goel, received a letter in which the culprits demanded Rs. 6 lakhs as protection amount. They directed Mr. Goel to send the money through his employee, Ratan Tali. Mr. Goel then received a phone call in which the caller asked him to deliver the money at Bhopura.

Suspecting that Ratan was involved in the extortion bid, the police interrogated him. He broke down and confessed to having conspired with his friends, Virender Choudhary, Ram Kirpal and Kari Nadab, to extort money from Mr. Goel.

SIB records profit

NEW DELHI SEPT. 12. Into its platinum jubilee year, the South Indian Bank (SIB) has recorded a net profit of Rs. 84.33 crores, an increase of 16.6 per cent from Rs. 72.33 crores achieved in the previous year. The total business of the bank rose by 19.1 per cent from Rs. 10.474 crores to Rs. 12.477 crores when compared to the growth of 14 per cent in the preceding year.
