Sudanese officials get ringside view of locomotives

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, SEPT. 12. The brief stay in Tiruchi was an enriching experience for Mohammed ElFadl Hassan Elfadi ElHassan and seven of his colleagues from the Sudan Railway Corporation (SRC).

The eight technical personnel from SRC were in the city to undergo a basic four-week training programme on maintenance of diesel locomotives at the Diesel Traction Training Centre (DTTC), attached to Diesel Loco Shed, and at Basic Training Centre in the Central Workshops, Golden Rock.

The programme, which concluded on September 3, was part of the contract signed between the Rail India Technical and Engineering Services and the SRC for supply of four Cape Gauge Locomotives to Sudan.

The workshop has been entrusted with the task of converting four `in-service' metre gauge locomotives for Sudanese railways.

The SRC team of two engineers and six supervisors from the electrical and mechanical departments were acquainted with the maintenance of metre gauge diesel locomotives from the DTTC instructors and the Golden Rock Workshop personnel.

To help the visitors, reading material on the basic aspects of the locomotives was distributed to them.

The training dealt with maintenance of engines, generators and motors, electrical transmission and circuits. It dwelt upon preventive maintenance of engines. Theory and practical classes were also held.

Mohammed Elfadl, railway engineer from Khartoum, said the programme was useful as they gained practical exposure. The team also visited the Diesel Locomotive Works at Varanasi.

The chief workshop manager of Golden Rock Workshop, G.R.K. Raju, distributed mementos to the team at a valedictory function.
