On protests

Sir, — A spate of political rallies and protests threw life out of gear and disrupted life in Bangalore recently. The issues that led to the protests have no relation to any problem facing the common man. The question is can we ban such protests.

A legal ban on protests and demonstrations will amount to curbing the freedom of expression under Article 19 (1) (A) of the Constitution. However, the protestors have no right to curb the fundamental rights of others. Therefore, the police have the right to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and an unaffected life as also the rule of law.

Regulate protests

Sir, — The indifferent attitude of the authorities concerned in addressing public issues at the right time has led to violent protests, resulting in loss of property and life.

It is undemocratic to ban bandhs and protests. The Government can, however, impose reasonable restrictions on holding them.

Moreover, it should regulate holding of bandhs and protests at specified times and places so that life is not affected.

K.T. Thimmareddy,

Depositors' plight

Sir, — Much has been said about the plight of depositors, especially retired people, who had invested their hard-earned money in fixed-deposit schemes of non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) that collapsed.

One could only blame the enforcement wings of the Reserve Bank India, statutory auditors and others for the problem that has been caused.

The law has loopholes through which the directors of NBFCs have siphoned off the depositors' money.

Unable to face the wrath of the depositors, some of these companies have also sought their liquidation. Added to this is the tragedy of the collapse of some scheduled banks.

The depositors and shareholders in both the cases are left in the lurch. What is the Government going to do?

K. Seshadri,
