Labour Minister's pat for VSP

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 12. The Minister for Labour and Employment, G. Vinod, on Sunday complimented the management and the workforce of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) for achieving a turnaround.

After holding talks with the management and the trade union leaders at Ukkunagaram, he told reporters here that it was a rare credit on their part to record a profit of Rs. 2,500 crores in the current year from a stage when it was referred to the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) for incurring a loss of Rs. 800 crores.

Mr. Vinod said it could be possible due to collective effort of the employees and the management. On the expansion plans of VSP, he said the State Government would extend all possible help to increase the capacity of the plant from the existing 3.5 million tonnes to 10 million tonnes by 2020.

"I am impressed with their long-term vision and I am confident they will achieve it with the wholehearted support of 16,000-strong workforce,'' he said.

Labour reforms

On the exercise undertaken by the Congress Government for implementing labour reforms, he said their main objective was to create conducive working environment in the State. He said steps were being taken for extending benefits like Provident Fund and ESI in all the organisations.

An action plan would be finalised by the year-end for evolving a workers' security plan. A guaranteed period of employment would be introduced for all eligible persons, he said, adding that backlog posts would be filled in phases.

KCR remarks

Mr. Vinod condemned the remarks made by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader and the Union Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, for attacking the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. "The comments made by him are derogatory and unparliamentary," he said.
