Drop in humidity

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2 degree celsius and a minimum of 24.6 degree Celsius, on Sunday. Humidity dropped from 74 per cent in the morning to 76 per cent in the evening.

Andhra Bank branch opened

The Andhra Bank opened its new branch at Siddhartha Nagar here on Sunday. Speaking to reporters after the inaugural function, the bank's executive director, R. Balakrishnan, said this was the 24th branch of the bank in Vijayawada city and 73rd unit in Krishna district.

Informing that the bank had a total of 11 ATMs across the city, Mr. Balakrishnan said it had also introduced new schemes like Aarogyadaan, a group mediclaim policy, Jeevan Abhaya and financial services like mutual funds, savings bonds, BSNL bill collection, direct taxes and VMC taxes.

Bro. John Kallarackal, principal of the St. Mathew's Public School, has been given lifetime achievement award for his outstanding achievement on the education front.

"It gives a sense of satisfaction," said Mr. Kallarackal reacting to the achievement. The award was presented to him at a function organised by the Andhra Pradesh Minorities' Educational Institutions' Society, Hyderabad, on Saturday. This is the eighth State-level award bagged by the principal while he has also been selected for the prestigious `Jewel of India' award by the International Institute of Education and Management, Delhi. The award would be presented on October 8 in New Delhi.

Yoga is the only panacea to get rid of chronic ailments, said Ch. Nageswara Rao, owner of Pinnamaneni Poly Clinic in the city.

Addressing a seminar on "Mental Stress-Cure", organised as part of a yoga camp set up at hotel Paradise by Pranadaata Yoga Seva Kendra, Mr. Rao said people could lead a healthy life by practicing yoga. Besides acting as a stress-buster, it also helps in enhancement of concentration power, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Sports help in personality development. They help youth to groom their over-all persona into a force to reckon with even while enhancing their self-esteem, said Y. Kishore, the physical education director, Acharya Nagarjuna University.

He was speaking at a meeting organised in connection with the inauguration of inter-college swimming (men and women) competitions, at the Gandhinagar Gymkhana swimming pool, organized by the Satavahana College under the aegis of Nagarjuna University.
