Keep the streets safe Sir, - The streets of Thripunithura, the seat of the erstwhile Maharaja of Cochin, have been taken over by stray animals, mainly dogs, cows and bulls. They are causing a lot of hardship to pedestrians on busy streets. In recent times, many incidents of attacks have been reported by a bull which strays on the town roads. The heavy rush of people during the Onam festival season had caused confusion among these stray animals and they have been attacking people without provocation. The stray dog menace has become a regular affair here. Reports of attacks by dogs are no longer unusual and hospitals are flooded with patients seeking anti-rabies injections. The Municipal authorities are requested to take action in this regard. They have given various reasons for their inaction like inadequate funds, pressure from animal protection organisations, etc. But when it hinders the right for free movement of people on the streets, the authorities have some responsibilities. They should protect the life of citizens, which are more precious than that of stray animals. Joseph George A Thripunithura Taming auto drivers Sir, - The decision of the City Police Commissioner to rein in autorickshaw drivers is welcome. I have observed that autorickshaw drivers are difficult to deal with and in view of the fact that there are no public modes of transport to remote areas other than autorickshaws, the move by the Police Commissioner is a great relief. I congratulate the Police Commissioner for the initiative. K. Aravindakshan Maradu
