MADURAI, SEPT. 12. The district unit of the Tamil Nadu Government Public Library Officers' Union has urged the Government to grant a risk allowance of Rs.150 to the librarians, as they run the risk of contracting respiratory diseases from the dust deposited on books in libraries. The union also demanded promotions for the library employees and wanted the Government to consider them as technical staff and fix salaries accordingly, as library science was considered a technical subject. It also sought a change in either the working hours or weekly holidays for libraries. The other demands were opening of central libraries wherever there was none, promotion of part-time librarians with the essential qualification of library science as rural librarians and creation of superintendent's posts at the district head offices.
