Thiruvananthapuram
Parking slots Sir, - Since the road widening could not be done in the city due to some reason or other, the existing roads should be well maintained though the roads remain narrow. Demarcation of bus bays, enforcement of parking regulations and provision for off-street parking facilities should be done urgently. Vacant places belonging to the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and the State Government at various part of the city (like the old comfort station compound at Vazhuthacaud) should be used for providing parking facilities. - V.G. Balakrishnan, A welcome move Sir, - The Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation's move to impose a strict licensing and monitoring system for display boards is a welcome move. This licensing system is a bold step with regard to public safety and social interest. At present there are a lot of rickety advertisement hoardings in the city and several of them are posing danger. Big cutouts of politicians of Kerala-based parties were also appeared in the city recently like Tamil Nadu style. Such kind of `photo exhibition' of political leaders should also be levied. Every advertisement boards, which are to be installed in the city area, should come under the purview of the licensing system and no one should be allowed to evade tax apart from the safety aspect. By introducing a well-codified fee structure for issuing licences for hoardings and other advertisement boards of varying sizes the Corporation can increase their revenue remarkably. The Corporation can also classify the city centres with different fee structure according to the area's commercial importance for the issuance of licence. The authorities should take immediate steps for a public notification in this regard. - K.P. Ashok Kumar, Pattom. Karamana. Civil station Sir, - A large number of Government offices are located in the city at different places. Most of them are housed in rented premises. This causes inconvenience to the public and more expenditure for the Government. A foundation stone was laid at Kowdiar three years back for constructing a civil station but now this place has been earmarked for some other purpose. And now the Minister for Public Works is looking for a suitable place for the civil station. Hectares of land is available in the compound of the District Court at Vanchiyoor. - Karamana Manikantan Nayar, Vanchiyoor.
Pattom.
