This Day That Age
The threat of a military coup in Viet Nam grew in Saigon on September 13 as army units held countrywide protest meetings against the Government's decision to dismiss their Chief of Staff, General Nguyen Van Hinh. The Secretary of State for Defence, Mr. Le Ngoo Chan was refused admittance to the General Staff Headquarters in Saigon when he came to summon Gen. Van Hinh to surrender his post. The 40-year-old army chief reaffirmed that he would ignore the Government order to take six months' leave and go on a mission to France. Extra guards were posted at key points in Saigon as tension in the city mounted. Strong forces of troops and police faced each other outside the city's radio station, the troops sent by the General and the police by the Prime Minister.
