dated September 14, 1954: Narayana Guru centenary

The centenary celebrations of Sri Narayana Guru, arranged at the Sivagiri headquarters of the Sri Narayana Mission and the scene of his samadhi, were inaugurated on September 12 by Mr. Pattom Thanu Pillai, the T.C. Chief Minister, in the presence of a large gathering. The celebrations have a 10-day crowded programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Thanu Pillai said Sri Narayana Guru was responsible for the progressive changes brought about in Kerala during the last 100 years. He was born in very humble surroundings at Chempazhanathi, near Trivandrum, and nobody thought at that time that he would, in course of time, bring about such changes. His efforts to do away with casteism met with great success and his ideal was in later years accepted by all. His message was widely commended and in its propagation all people were enthusiastic.

The birth centenary of Sri Narayana Guru was also celebrated at Palghat under the auspices of the Vijnanodaya Sabha, Mr. Madhava Raja Varma, Valia Raja of Kollengode, presiding. Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, Minister for Agriculture, unveiling a statue of the Guru, observed that the essence of his teachings was that there was only one God, one religion and one caste. The Raja of Kollengode, in his address, said Sri Narayana Guru, like Sri Sankara, was born at a time when the Kerala society was infested with social evils and that the great work of Sri Narayana Guru lay in his having been able to consolidate the community.
