Who will be next Dharwad ZP chief?chief

By Our Special Correspondent

DHARWAD, SEPT. 13. The reluctance of the president of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayat to vacate in favour of another candidate at the end of his 10-month tenure, has put the affairs of the zilla panchayat in a quandary.

Ten months ago, when the election to the 20-month tenure of the zilla panchayat president commenced, there were two main contenders — Basavantappa Gudadari and S.K. Sottemmannavar. As a compromise, it was agreed that the two would share the tenure equally — 10 months each — and Mr. Gudadari was elected to the post.

Now, Mr. Gudadari appears to be reluctant to give up the office. He is reported to be disinclined to convene even a meeting of the members of the ruling party to discuss the situation.

In the 18-member Zilla Panchayat, the Congress originally had a strength of 14, followed by three of the Bharatiya Janata Party and one belonging to the Janata Dal (United).

With the election of Vinay Kulkarni as MLA and expulsion another member, who had crossed over to the Janata Dal (Secular), the strength of the Congress has come down to twelve.

The matter had been complicated by the fact that other members belonging to OBC2 group have also staked their claims to occupy the top post besides Sottemmannaver.
