SHG women to distribute medicines for tuberculosis

ERODE, SEPT. 13 . As many as 85 rural women belonging to SHGs were imparted training in administering medicines to tuberculosis patients, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said.

At the District Tuberculosis Society's general council meeting here recently, he said that the training was provided under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Scheme, and medicines through the society.

The women would visit villages every day or once a week to distribute medicines. The Collector said during the last year 1,00,800 TB seals (stamp) were sold to the public, which was higher than the previous year.

He said that the scheme had been functioning since 2001 in the district and 55,72,923 outpatients were examined and medicines given. Further, 73,252 sputum tests were taken, of which 4,415 tested positive for TB.

One TB centre was formed for every five lakh individuals, and there were five such centres in the district. Further, 30 sputum-testing centres were also functioning in the district where tests were conducted free of cost.

Proposals were sent to the Government for opening of a sputum centre at the Thalawady Primary Health Centre (PHC) and said that PHCs and Government Hospitals had sufficient drugs for tuberculosis patients.

The Joint Director, Health Services (in charge), V. Nagarajan, Deputy Director, TB Control, A. Rajasekaran, and the Superintendent, Government Headquarters Hospital, K.K.A. Usain Ali, spoke.
