Planned demolition: North Korea

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: South Korea on Monday indicated that it would evaluate North Korea's reported statement that a massive blast that occurred in its northernmost inland province of Yanggang last Thursday was a planned demolition of a mountain to build a hydroelectric plant. The South Korean Unification Minister, Chung Dong-young, said in Seoul "there is no basis to link the blast to a test of nuclear weapons as reported by the foreign media." Seoul would assess whether the place was a suitable location for the construction of a hydropower project. Mr. Chung also said he was briefed by officials that there was "no special correlation" between the mushroom-like cloud that was monitored above the area, where the blast took place, and the signs of seismic waves detected there.
