Condemnable

Sir, — The proposed action of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to demolish the tomb of Afzal Khan and illegal structures around it in Maharashtra is condemnable. With an eye on the State Assembly elections, the Sangh Parivar is resorting to gimmicks like the `tiranga yatra' and the demolition drama.

M. Premachandran,
Tiruchi, T.N.

Sir, — The move seeks to trigger another outburst of already inflamed passions and lowers the image of India in the world community. Let saner elements prevail upon various Hindutva organisations.

V. Narayana Raju,
Mummidivaram, A.P.

Sir, — Why does the VHP not work for the demolition of all illegal structures in the country, including those around temples springing up sporadically on pavements, platforms, road junctions, etc?

A.S. Adikesavan,
Chennai

Sir, — The VHP only wants to remove the illegal structures near the tomb. It will not be out of context to point out that construction of tombs and other such structures over graves is not permissible in Islam.

S.M. Pasha,
Chennai
