Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, SEPT. 13. The newly formed Bellary-based Vishala Karnataka Rakshana Samiti has strongly opposed the demand for a separate State . The Samiti also planned to organise a movement to pressure the State Government to implement the recommendations of the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee to remove regional imbalances in north Karnataka.
Resolution
The samiti, which met here on Sunday, adopted a resolution opposing the demand for a separate State for north Karnataka and also condemned such a proposal stating that it was unwarranted. Giving details of the deliberations of the meeting, G. Umesh, president of Bellary Zilla Panchayat, and N. Pratap Reddy, leader of the Janata Dal (Secular), said that the meeting had resolved to support the cause of establishing a Bench of the Karnataka High Court in north Karnataka.
Division opposed
The aim of the meeting was to oppose the division of the State and pressure the Government to take steps to develop the backward regions in north Karnataka, they said. Mr. Reddy said that the samiti would organise another meeting on September 18 to chalk out the strategies to be adopted to pressure the Government to take up developmental works. The samiti also decided to write to the Bellary Bar Association regarding its decision, and urge them not to press for the division of the State. H. Hanumanthappa, organising secretary of the committee; Kalkhamba Pampapati, Congress member; Shivaprakash, JD(S) member; and Shivashankar, CPI(M) and Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha member, were present.
