DAVANGERE, SEPT. 13. Twenty cases of AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) have been reported in Davangere district in August. Disclosing this at the review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) here on Monday, an officer from the Health Department said that over the past five months, as many as 119 persons in the district were diagnosed with AIDS and eight persons had died of the disease. The official also said that there was a considerable increase in the number of tuberculosis (TB) patients in the district and 271 persons had been diagnosed with TB over the past two months. The chief executive officer (CEO) of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, Narayanaswamy, was disappointed when the officer did not furnish complete details about various diseases and measures taken by the department to contain them. The Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Shanth Raj, told the meeting that the department had taken up construction of 150 school buildings. He said that the construction of 120 school buildings was in progress. The CEO asked the DDPI to organise awareness camps and educate parents about the importance of educating their children. When the issue of slow progress in housing was raised at the meeting, the CEO said that the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation was unhappy over the recovery and had stopped financing the schemes.
