DAVANGERE, SEPT. 13. D. Basavaraj, senior councillor, is the new president of the Davangere City Municipal Council (CMC). K.R. Dyavappa of the Congress was elected vice-president of the CMC. Both were elected unopposed. Though the post of president had been allotted to the general category this time, Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA, who has the final say in the elections to the civic body, chose Mr. Basavaraj who is from the Bhovi community (SC). He also suggested Mr. Dyavappa for the post of vice-president, which was reserved for a Scheduled Tribe candidate. Earlier in the day, S.S. Mallikarjun, former Minister and son of Mr. Shivashankarappa, held a meeting with senior councillors and apprised them on the selection of the candidates for the posts. The Congress has 32 councillors in the 35-member council, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Party have one councillor each. The Assistant Commissioner, Bettsurmutt, supervised the elections. Mr. Basavaraj addressed the councillors after the elections and said that he would give priority to providing potable water to Davangere and improving the condition of roads.
