HYDERABAD, SEPT. 13. International Crops Research Institute for the Semi- Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) will launch `Strategy 2010' to strengthen research and research delivery mechanism to improve agricultural production and livelihoods in the dry land areas of Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The strategy was approved by the Governing Board of ICRISAT, which met at Niamey in Niger, West Africa from September 7 to 9, according to a press release.
Well being of poor
William Dar, Director-General of ICRISAT, said the new strategy would help realise ICRISAT's vision to 2010, which was well being of the poor of the semi-arid tropics, through agricultural research. "ICRISAT's research will make major food and feed crops more productive, nutritious and affordable to the poor," Dr. Dar said. "Further, it will diversify utilisation options for staple food crops, develop tools and techniques to manage risk and utilize the natural resource base."
Global impact areas
He said the institute's work would focus on the four global impact areas and they were generating profits and managing risk, nourishing families and agro-enterprises, enhancing livelihood and ecosystem resilience and building partner power. These impact areas would be pursued through four global research themes: markets and impacts to inform and provide strategic direction and prioritisation of research issues; harnessing biotechnology for the poor; crop improvement, management and utilisation for food security and health; and agro-ecosystems. Its vision would be to develop into a World Dry Tropics Centre.
