Policy on khadi rebate soon

HUBLI SepT. 13. The State Government is expected to announce by the end of this month the policy of granting rebate to khadi on the lines of the Centre's policy. An assurance in this regard was given by P.G.R. Sindhia, Minister for Industries during a discussion with representatives of khadi organisations in Bangalore recently. The Minister promised to expedite clearance of arrears of rebate payable to khadi institutions and said 70 per cent of the arrears would be cleared by November this year, according to B.S. Patil, chairman of the Karnataka Khadi and Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha. According to Mr. Patil, Rs. 7 crore was due for the past two financial years. He said the Minister was receptive to suggestions. Mr. Sindhia had acknowledged the potential of khadi units. Mr. Patil said the Minister wanted to set up a committee on the policy to be adopted. Patil Puttappa, chairman of the Karnataka Development ForumPuttappa said the Government should have a permanent system for giving rebate.

Best bank

SIRSI SEPT. 13. The Kanara District Central Cooperative Bank has been awarded a medal and cash prize for being the Best District Cooperative Bank for 2003-04 by Apex Bank, Bangalore.

The bank's president, S.L. Gotnekar, and the Managing Director, L.M. Hegde, received the award, according to a press release.

Personality

development

MYSORE SEPT. 13. The Bharatheeya Samskurti Vidya Kendra will conduct a personality development course for students from September 19. The course comprises modules on general knowledge, improving memory, absorption, recognition, and others. Those interested may contact K. Prizewinners

MYSORE SEPT. 13. The list of prizewinners in the essay competition for college students conducted by Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens has been announced. According to a release from the Mysore zoo, S. Sharanya of Maharani's College won the first prize in the English section while Sandeep Patole and Ajith Ranganath of Ramakrishna Vidyalaya stood second and third, respectively.

In the Kannada section, R. Raghavendra of Maharaja's College stood first while R. Avinash of Sadvidya PU College and Preethi Krishna of Maharani's College stood second and third, respectively.

Financial aid

MYSORE SEPT. 13. Applications have been invited by the Mysore City Corporation for the award of scholarships under the Jnanasiri programme for the academic year 2004-05.

A release said that students who had passed examinations above SSLC and pursuing any course are eligible to apply. The scholarship amount would vary depending on the course. Those interested may contact the Health Department at the corporation.

The last date for submission of completed applications along with the relevant documents is October 31.

Books available

MYSORE SEPT. 13. The Department of Kannada and Culture has released a set of books on Dasa literature and Sarvajna's Vachanas. A release from the department said that the Dasa literature series comprising 50 books cost Rs. 2,400, while individual books cost Rs. 60.

Sarvajna's Vachanas also cost Rs. 60. The books are available at the department's office in Kalamandira premises, the release added.

Quiz winners

BELLARY Sept. 13. Vasudha Dharwad and Sanat Kumar bagged the first and second prizes, respectively, in the quiz competition organised by the Shri Gururaja Seva Samiti, Cowl Bazar, as part of the 333rd Aradhana Mahotsava of Sri Raghavendra Swamiji.

D. Padmaja secured third place. Special prizes were also awarded to C. Shruti and C. Sashikumar here on Sunday.

Sports meet

BELLARY Sept. 13. A two-day district-level sports meet for primary school students will be organised at the District Stadium here from Thursday.

Around 1,000 students from all over the district are expected to take part in the meet organised in association with the Sri Balanjaneya Vidya Samsthe. There would be 13 events for boys and 11 events for girls, K. Prahaladachar, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, said.

Preparations for the meet, including boarding and lodging facilities for the participants, was progressing and around 86 sports officers were being deputed for the event, he said.

NSS Award

SIRSI SEPT. 13. G.T. Bhat, NSS officer of Motensar Memorial Arts and Science College, has been conferred the D.C. Pawate NSS Award of Karnatak University, Dharwad, for 2003-04 for his contribution to the National Service Scheme for the past five years.

Artificial limbs

MANGALORE SEPT 13. The Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd. will organise an artificial limb camp for the benefit of physically handicapped persons in October, according to a press release.

Those interested in availing the benefits of the camp should send details giving their address, contact numbers, particulars of the handicap and other details to the Deputy Manager (administration), MRPL Ltd., post Kuthethur, via Katipalla, Mangalore-575030. The exact date and venue of the camp will be specified later, the release added.

Yoga camp

MANGALORE SEPT. 13. The Rajayoga Education and Research Foundation will conduct a 10-day free yoga and meditation camp for women from Thursday between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., according to a press release.

The participants will be taught yogasana, pranayama and rajayoga dhyana and the benefits of doing such exercises by the Yogarathna Gopalakrishna Delampady. Interested women above 15 years of age can contact the Foundation office in Urwa stores. The maximum number of participants will be 60 and admission will be done on a first come first serve basis. New Ministers on Monday?

Bangalore Sept. 13. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has postponed, by a few days, his visit to New Delhi in connection with the Ministry expansion. He was to have left on Monday and returned on Wednesday. Sources close to the Chief Minister told The Hindu that the Chief Minister had not finalised his travel plans and was only thinking of leaving for New Delhi to hold discussions with the party High Command. He apparently wanted to synchronise his Delhi trip with the return of the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, from the U.S. after attending a Kannada conference. It was stated Mr. Dharam Singh might leave for Delhi on Thursday and the new Ministers might be sworn in on Monday. The Chief Minister is under pressure from the coalition partner, the Janata Dal (Secular), to expand the Ministry. Short-listing the Congressmen who could be accommodated in the Ministry has proved to be a difficult task for him.

Dharam Singh for Hyderabad

Bangalore Sept. 13. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will be felicitated by backward classes and weaker sections in Andhra Pradesh at a function to be held at the Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderbad on Tuesday. He will leave for Hyderabad at 11.30 a.m. by a scheduled flight and return to Bangalore in the evening.

JD(U) not to contest from Bidar

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 13 . The president of the Janata Dal (United) and convener of the National Democratic Alliance, George Fernandes, said his party would not field a candidate in the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Bidar. Addressing presspersons after addressing a rally at Bharama Sagar, about 40 km from here, on Monday, Mr. Fernandes said he was not sure whether the Bharatiya Janata Party had sought the support of the Janata Dal (U) in the byelection. "Have they (BJP) approached us seeking support?'' he asked B. Somashekar, president of the State unit of the Janata Dal (U). Mr. Somashekar replied that it had not.

HAL overhauls gas turbine

BANGALORE Sept. 13. The Industrial and Marine Gas Turbine (IMGT) division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has overhauled and tested the first industrial LM2500 gas turbine for Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC). The gas turbine, which has a rated power of 25 MW, was handed over by P.V. Augusthy, General Manager, HAL IMGT Division, to S.K. Pandey, General Manager, ONGC, at a function here on Monday. Earlier, ONGC used to get the gar turbines overhauled abroad. Speaking on the occasion, A.K. Saxena, Managing Director, HAL (Bangalore Complex), expressed his appreciation of the fruitful and time-tested cooperation between ONGC and HAL. In June 2003, HAL signed a long-term business agreement with ONGC for overhaul and repair of industrial Avon gas turbines operated by ONGC on its offshore platforms.
