CHITRADURGA, SEPT. 13. George Fernandes, former Defence Minister and president of Janata Dal (United), on Monday called upon the people to fight foreign forces which were trying to impose their interests on the nation. He was addressing a rally at Bharama Sagara, about 40 km from here, which was organised to thank the people for supporting the Janata Dal (U) candidate in the election to the Legislative Assembly from Bharama Sagara. Mr. Fernades, who is the convener of the National Democratic Alliance, alleged that the Congress-led Government at the Centre was promoting the interests of foreign agencies. He charged the Union Government with trying to help foreign agencies meet their goal, which, he said, was essentially to promote the interest of the U.S. If the Government assisted such agencies, it would prove to be costly for the people of the India, he added. Mr. Fernandes termed the Government's policies "anti-labour, anti-poor, anti-people and anti-India." He questioned the propriety of appointing Montek Singh Ahluwalia as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and alleged that he was promoting the interests of American agencies. B. Somashekar, former Minister and president of the State unit of the Janata Dal (U), criticised the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance. He felt that the State Government had failed on all fronts, and alleged that the Government had sacrificed the interest of the people, especially in the admissions issue. Mr. Somashekhar said that because of the alliance between the Congress and the Janata Dal (S), the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had become the high command for Janata Dal (S) legislators, and H.D. Deve Gowda, a leader for the Congress. J.C. Madhuswamy, Janata Dal (U) MLA, said although there were only a few party legislators, they would take up people's issues.
Bhadra project
Basavaraja Bommai, MLC, expressed his commitment to the implementation of the Upper Bhadra Project, for irrigation in Chitradurga and other districts. H. Anjaneya, Bharama Sagara MLA, promised to take up the cause of development of Chitradurga district. G.M. Siddeswhar, Davangere MP, said that the Government had failed to solve the problems of the poor. He criticised the Government for not supplying textbooks to students. B.T. Channabasappa, Bheemappa Sareekar and M.P. Nadagouda, legislators, spoke. Mr. Fernandes, Mr. Bommai, Mr. Channabasappa, Mr. Anjaneya, Mr. Sareekar, Mr. Nadagouda and Mr. Siddeshwar were felicitated.
