MADURAI, SEPT. 13. Hundreds of Communist Party of India cadres were today arrested in the southern districts, when they tried to stage demonstration to press their demands. They demanded that the State Government waive interest on farm loans, advance fresh loans to farmers and supply 30 kg of free rice to farm workers. Over 200 persons were arrested in Madurai. The former MP, D. Pandiyan, led the protest. Forty others were arrested at Melur.
Virudhunagar
A total of 1,457 cadres, including 384 women, were arrested in Virudhunagar district. More than 900 volunteers, who gathered at Ramakrishnapuram at Srivilliputtur, led by the district secretary, T. Ramasamy, were arrested, when they attempted to take out a procession to the taluk office.
Sivaganga
Around 1,500 cadres, including 500 women, were taken into custody in Sivaganga district. The State vice-president, C. Mahendran, led the protest at Sivaganga. The former MLA, K. Thangamani, took part in the demonstration at Manamadurai.
Ramanathapuram
Around 300 cadres, including 65 women, were arrested at six places in Ramanathapuram district. The district secretary, N.K. Rajan, led the protest at Ramanathapuram.
Dindigul
Over 180 cadres, including 41 women, were arrested, when they blocked American Mission Church Road, in front of the municipal office. At Palani, 112 persons were arrested when they staged a demonstration and tried to block Palani-Dharapuram Main Road, in front of the taluk office.
Theni
About 299 cadres were arrested at Periyakulam, Bodinaickanur, Cumbum and Kadamalaigundu.
Nagercoil
The police arrested 105 activists when they tried to picket the Collectorate at Nagercoil. The State executive committee member, T.M. Murthy, led the agitation.
Tirunelveli
Hundreds of cadres were arrested when they staged road roko in Tirunelveli. In Tirunelveli, 755 cadres, including 121 women, led by the Tenkasi MP, M. Appadurai, assembled in front of Railway Junction and tried to go to the Collectorate to submit a petition. When the police halted them, they blocked traffic, and were arrested. Farmers from rural areas were seen holding aloft withered paddy crops and raised slogans against the Government's "lethargic attitude" to sanctioning fresh farm loans. At Sivagiri, 337 functionaries, led by the district secretary, Shanmugavel, were arrested.
Tuticorin
Over 700 cadres were arrested at Kovilpatti, Ettaiyapuram, Tiruchendur and Tuticorin. They were released in the evening.
