Government self-financing colleges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 13. The Director of the LBS Centre for Science and Technology has clarified that the fee applicable to students gaining admission to the self-financing engineering colleges under the State Government, will be only as recommended by the K.T. Thomas Committee, which was Rs. 38,700 for the first year. It was not necessary on the part of the students to remit Rs. 1 lakh in addition, as deposit to be returned at the end of the course. The counselling for admission to these seats is in progress here. Candidates with ranks from 9501 to 11000, as per the rank list published by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, have been directed to report for the allotment of seats on September 14 and those with ranks from 11001 to 12500, on the following day.

CAP for engineering admission

At the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) for admission to the engineering courses, 954 students were allotted seats today in the different colleges. Candidates with ranks from 14701 to 18200 have been directed to report for the CAP on September 14.

Minister's demand

The Revenue Minister, K. M. Mani, said here on Monday that the Centre should give emphasis to the implementation of the recommendations of the past Commissions that looked into Centre-State relations. While the announcement of the Union Home Minister, Shivaraj Patil, to set up two Commissions to review Centre-State relations was welcome, it was notable that the recommendations of previous Commission were yet to be implemented, the Minister noted. Mr. Mani said that considerable changes had come into effect in the administrative relations between the Centre and States following the implementation of the Panchayati Raj Act. Fundamental changes remained to be effected in administrative, financial and legislative matters.

SBI extends scheme

The State Bank of India (SBI) is extending its Onam Bonanza Scheme up to September 15. Under the scheme, the bank offers a special interest rate ranging from 7 to 8 per cent for housing and car loans. The scheme is being extended in view of the overwhelming response from the public.

CPI leaders visit Thurithiparambu

Thrissur Sept. 13. A delegation of the Communist Party of India (CPI), led by C. K. Chandrappan, MP, visited Thurithiparambu, near here, this morning. The Vicar of the St. Varaprasada Matha Church, Job Chittilappally, was found dead with stab injuries, at Thiruthiparambu on August 28. The CPI leaders later met the Archbishop of the Thrissur Archdiocese, Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the Irinjalakuda Bishop, Mar James Pazhayattil, and other heads of the Church, and discussed issues related to the investigation of the case. The delegation included K. P. Rajendran, MLA, Meenakshi Thampan and U. S. Sasi. Mr. Chandrappan told reporters that the case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

State needs third front: Thomas

The State needs a third political front, P. C. Thomas, MP, has said. Mr. Thomas told reporters here on Monday that the MPs from Kerala were the least influential at the Centre and this strengthened the need for a third front. "The unification of different Kerala Congress parties is desirable,'' Mr. Thomas said. Earlier, Mr. Thomas visited Thurithiparambu, where the Vicar of the St. Varaprasada Matha Church, was found dead on August 28 with stab injuries. Mr. Thomas said the case should be investigated directly by the Director General of Police or be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Kathakali adaptation of `Macbeth'

The Kathakali adaptation of Shakespeare's `Macbeth' will be staged by the Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam at the St. Joseph College at Irinjalakuda, near here, on September 14. The adaptation is based on the `attakatha' by Kadathanattu Narendra Warrier, says a press release.

SBTEU national meet

KANNUR SEPT. 13. The 25th all-India conference of the State Bank of Travancore Employees' Union (SBTEU), affiliated to the All-India Bank Employees' Association, will be held here on February 12, 13 and 14. Announcing this here today, the union all-India vice-president, A.C. Madhavan, said that nearly 1,200 delegates from different States would attend the conference. The AIBEA all-India general secretary, C.H. Venkatachalam, would be the chief guest at the conference, he said.

NCC cadets sail to

foreign ports

KOCHI SEPT. 13. Ten Naval NCC Cadets, selected from various NCC directorates by the director general, NCC, New Delhi, set sail from Kochi on a 33-day cruise to foreign countries on the Indian Naval Ship, Tir. The team will visit Port Victoria, Mombassa and Male. These NCC cadets aim to spread the message of peace and harmony, fostering the spirit of adventure and comradeship during their long voyage.

Bank staff protest

KOLLAM Sept. 13. The Kollam MP, P. Rajendran, will inaugurate a demonstration by the activists of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UBFU) on September 15, in support of their demand for a fresh wage contract. The demonstration, to be held in front of the Indian Bank branch here, will be a prelude to an all-India bank strike on October 5 and 6 called by the UBFU. The district convener of the UBFU, M.M. Anzari, said that protest marches heralding the national strike would be held at important centres in the district from September 27 to October 1.

Dharna

The Maruthimala Samrakshana Samskarika Samithy today organised a dharna in front of the district collectorate here demanding that the Maruthi hillock be protected from exploitation by the granite quarry mafia. The dharna was inaugurated by the samithy chairman, Thengamam Balakrishnan. The district panchayat president, Aisha Potti, the Kottarakara Block Panchayat president, S. Gopala Krishna Pillai, and the Plachimada Aikyadhardya Samithy convener, R. Ajayan, addressed the dharna.

Death anniversary

KASARAGOD SEPT. 13. The All-India general secretary of the Communist Party of India, A.B.Bardhan, would lay the foundation stone of Dr.Subba Rao Memorial building and also inaugurate the public meeting to be held in Hosangadi, in Manjeswaram near here, to commemorate the first death anniversary of CPI leader and former MP, the late Dr.A.Subba Rao. The CPI State general secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, would deliver the Dr. Rao memorial speech at the function to be presided over by the veteran CPI leader, E.Chandrasekharan. The memorial rally to be held prior to the meeting would start from Dr.Rao's `sruthi mandapam' near his house by around 2-30 p.m.

festival

KOZHIKODE SEPT. 13. The festival at the shrine of Mother of God Cathedral (Kurisupalli) situated at Mavoor Road junction is being celebrated from September 14 to 19. The Bishop of Kozhikode, Dr. Joseph Kalathiparambil, would hoist the flag to announce commencement of the church festival, the Vicar, Dr. Thomas Panakkal, said today.

Memorial meeting

A commemorative meeting has been organised at Alakapuri auditorium here at 5 p.m. tomorrow to mark the fifth death anniversary of the former Mayor, P.C. Kuttikrishnan Nair. The function has been arranged by Kozhikode Art Lovers Association (Kala), a socio-cultural organisation of which late Kuttikrishnan Nair was the president.
