Meet not against Karunakaran: leaders

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, SEPT. 13. Congress leaders from the "I'' faction in the district who attended Sunday's controversial group meeting here have clarified that the gathering was in no way against the senior party leader, K. Karunakaran.

Talking to The Hindu here today, the DCC vice-president, K. Karunakaran Pillai, and the chairman of the Kollam Development Authority, A.A. Samad, both of them who attended the meeting, said that they "had been with the leader since 1978 and would continue to be strongly with him''.

Unscheduled meet

Rumours were agog here on Saturday that the meeting in question would be held at the Guest House on Sunday. However, Mr. Pillai said that the rumours were baseless and that the meeting was an unscheduled one and was organised when the leaders happened to meet at a wedding reception.

He said that since the former Electricity Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan, was also attending the meeting, he had spoken to Mr. Karunakaran in advance. The intention was to make an attempt to sort out the misunderstandings between Mr. Sivadasan and Mr. Karunakaran.

DCC president

Mr. Samad admitted that the issue of replacing the Kollam DCC president, Sooranad Rajashekaran, had come up for discussion. He said that there was a unanimous opinion at the meeting that Mr. Rajashekaran had to be replaced in the larger interests of the party and the `I' group in Kollam.

The meeting concluded that Mr. Rajashekaran was contributing more to the growth of the Communist Marxist Party in the district than the Congress, he said.

Mr. Samad said that he and the former DCC president, K.C. Rajan, who also attended the meeting, would meet Mr. Karunakaran in Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow to apprise him on the party and group situation in the district.

Mr. Rajashekaran could not be contacted for his reaction to the developments. Sources close to him said that he was on a tour to Kashmir in connection with a programme on cooperative societies.
