NEW DELHI, SEPT. 13. Visiting the famous shrine of Kedarnath in Uttaranchal has been made easier, particularly for old people, as the Uttaranchal Government, in collaboration with Pawan Hans Helicopters, has introduced daily flights to this snow-clad temple township. Similarly, efforts are on to launch similar service to another famous ancient shrine -- Badrinath. According to the Uttaranchal Tourism Secretary, N.N. Prasad, this move would not only give a boost to religious tourism in the State but also make the shrines more accessible. The State Government was planning helicopter service to other places of religious and adventure tourism in Kumaon and Garhwal, he added. Using the US-made Bell-407 helicopter, Pawan Hans will operate four flights per day from Augustmuni near Rudraprayag to Kedarnath and back, thus reducing the difficult trek to mere 12 km that will be covered in 20 minutes. The fare for the return journey, which includes "darshan" at the shrine and 90-minute stay, will be Rs.8,501. Pawan Hans would also connect other important destinations from Gauchar near Rudraprayag, said Mr. Prasad, adding that helicopter service to Badrinath was likely to be introduced soon.
