By Our Staff Reporter

The magician, Gopinath Muthukad, receiving the soil collected from Elanthoor, the village Mahatma Gandhi visited twice during the freedom struggle, from K.K.Nair, MLA, at a function in Pathanamthitta on Monday.

PATHANAMTHITTA, SEPT. 13. The Kerala Yatra, a campaign tour by the noted magician, Gopinath Muthukad, to propagate the Gandhian philosophy of love and non-violence, was accorded a rousing reception here this morning.

Mr Muthukad was on a mission to collect soil from each of the 14 districts in the State as part of his `Vandemataram' tour.

According to him, the soil collected from the 14 districts will be used to make a clay model of the State map to be presented to the Gandhi Sevashram at Wardha in Maharashtra.

The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, will hand over the model to Mr Muthukad at a function to be held at the Gandhi Park in Thiruvananthapuram on September 28.

Mr Muthukad said that he would hand over the model to the Maharastra Chief Minister for display at the Gandhi Sevashram in Wardha.

He said that the ongoing campaign was the follow-up of the Vismaya Bharatha Yatra of 2002. The `Vandemataram' tour began from Wardha on October 2 and will conclude at Kanyakumari on January 26, 2005.

Elanthoor connection

The soil collected from Elanthoor, near Pathanamthitta, which the Mahatma had visited twice during the freedom movement, was handed over to Mr Muthukad at a function held at the Gym Palace auditorium here this morning.

The local MLA, K.K.Nair, received the soil from the freedom fighter, K.C.Koshy, and spread it over a map of Kerala held by Mr Muthukad.

The District Panchayat president, K.K.Royson, presided over the function. The District Collector, Rabendra Kumar Agarwal, and the municipal chairperson, Ajeeba M.Sahib, addressed the function jointly sponsored by the District Tourism Promotion Council, State Bank of India and the Tourism Department.

Magic show

A special magic show by Mr Muthukad based on four themes - the anti-tobacco drive, women empowerment, anti-terrorism drive and literacy campaign - was held later.
