Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 13. The Vijayawada MP, Lagadapati Rajagopal and several Congress legislators from the Krishna district, have requested the State Government to take steps to release water from the Nagarjunasagar project for the benefit of farmers in the upland areas forming part of the Tiruvuru, Mylavaram, Nandigama, Jaggayyapet and Nuzvid Assembly constituencies.
Letter to YSR
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, about the problems faced in the district on Sunday, Mr. Rajagopal and the legislators expressed surprise that only five out of the 20 mandals of the district had been declared drought-prone while all remaining mandals were also facing severe drought conditions. Farmers in the upland areas were facing acute drinking and irrigation water shortage due to the scanty rainfall registered in these areas. In view of this, the Government should consider the declaration of drought mandals on the basis of the actual rainfall utilised rather than that received and declare the remaining mandals drought-affected.
Condition of PHCs
Referring to the condition of primary health centres in the district, they expressed concern that the PHCs in a majority of places were lacking sufficient staff while the capacity of hospitals at places like Nandigama and Jaggayyapet was inadequate to cater to the growing needs of the patients. In view of this, the Government should take steps to double the bed strength at all such hospitals while providing the required staff to man them. Further, they recalled that the Chief Minister during his visit to the Vijayawada was a witness to the deplorable condition of the Government General Hospital. There was an immediate need to construct a new modern hospital with bed strength of 400 in addition to the 450-bed super specialty hospital under construction in the premises of Siddhartha Medical College. Funds to the tune of Rs. 26.6 crores were required for the completion of the works and the Government was requested to release the same at the earliest.
Lift schemes
Requesting the Chief Minister to release funds for the completion of several lift irrigation schemes in the district, they wanted the Government to provide 16-hour power supply to all the schemes to ensure supply of water to the desired acreage. Referring to the problems faced by the people in the city, they said that the residents of Machavaram, Moghulrajpuram and other areas were yet to get house site pattas despite repeated assurance and efforts should be made to provide the same for them. On the Municipal Corporation issues, they wanted the Government to immediately release outstanding dues to the tune of Rs. 14 crores while treating the Rs. 10 crores spent by the corporation for Pushkaram works as a grant instead of a loan.
