Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, SEPT.13. Thanks to the substantial inflows from upper reaches, water overflowed from the crest gates on to the concrete apron downstream the Prakasam barrage for the second time this season. Sudden floods in the local catchment led to the sudden increase in the water level at the barrage resulting in the overflows. The crest gates are usually operated to maintain a level of 12 feet at the barrage, but the water flowed above that level on Monday. There was no excess water in the barrage. It was, however, seen some amounts of it spilling over the gates due to wave action, as the Irrigation officials described it.
18,000-cusic mark
With the releases from the Nagarjunasagar project as well as the heavy rain in the catchment areas of Sattenapalli and Macheral, the inflows to the barrage touched the 18,000 cusecs mark and the officials are making the best of the situation by releasing 16,000 cusecs into canals that irrigate the Krishna delta. The flood in the inter-catchment has reduced the pressure on the Nagarjunasagar reservoir. As a result, the local irrigation officials requested the State level authorities to reduce the releases from Nagarjunasagar to 7,000 cusecs from the current inflows of over 13,000 cusecs every day. The officials are releasing the maximum amount of water that the respective canals can carry. As much as 8,500 cusecs is being released to the Krishna Eastern Main Canal and over 7,000 cusecs to the Western Main Canal and 500 cusecs to the Guntur Channel.
Tremors
The Irrigation officials said that there was no connection between the tremors in Krishna Lanka and the release or impounding of water at the Prakasam barrage. They argued that the water level at Prakasam barrage that was more than 11 feet throughout the Krishna Pushkarams had only increased marginally. The impounding of water in the pilot channel was also not a factor because not less than 5,000 cusecs of water was flowing in the Eastern Main Canal for several days now. There was no sudden changed in the hydrology of the areas to cause the tremors, they maintained.
