Centre to find out why revised census figures were not released first
NEW DELHI,
SEPT. 13
. The Government today said that it would find out why the revised figures of the census were not released in the first instance to avoid controversy.
Official sources said the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, was not happy with the briefing done by Census Commissioner, J.K. Banthia, who had met him on September 10 and explained to him the methodology of the demographic exercise and gave clarifications on the release of figures that stirred a public debate. The sources said the Ministry was trying to find out why the adjusted figures pertaining to the growth of the Muslim population were not released in the first place when the report was made public on September 6.
