Rs. 12.53 cr. for ryots' families

HYDERABAD: The Government has extended an assistance of Rs.12.53 crores to the families of farmers who have committed suicide. The Principal Secretary, Revenue, V.P. Jauhari, in a press release here on Monday said the new Government collected details separately about farmers who had committed suicide before and after it was sworn in on May 14. An amount of Rs. 8.26 crores was disbursed to families of 551farmers who died between July 1, 1998, and May 13, 2004. Another Rs. 4.27 crores was released to families of 285 farmers who died from May 14. Each family was paid Rs. 1.5 lakhs.

Distraught farmer hangs self

NIZAMABAD: A farmer, Pilli Peda Gangaiah (45) of Modegam in Sadasivnagar mandal, committed suicide by hanging to a log from the ceiling of his cattleshed on Sunday night. He had borrowed loans from banks and moneylenders to sink two borewells on his five-acre farm land and was not in a position to repay them. His wife had died last year.

Pylon demolition: tension prevails

ELURU: Tension prevailed in the agency villages of Buttayagudem mandal in West Godavari district following the demolition of a pylon built by the Communist Party of India (ML)-New Democracy in memory of its slain activist, Goruguntla Durga Rao, of Kondreddy tribe. According to information, the pylon built at Aliveru dam was reportedly dismantled by unidentified persons on Sunday night. The dispute between the Koyas of Jeedipadugudem and Aliveru Dam Colony and the Kondreddies of Aliveru, Lankapakalu, Nimmalapadu, Gottalarevu and Chintakonda in the mandal over fishing in the dam was said to have resulted in the demolition of the pylon.

Plea to sanction scholarships

HYDERABAD: Hundreds of students on Monday laid a siege to the Backward Classes (BCs) Welfare Commissioner's office demanding budgetary allocation from Rs.267 crores to Rs.800 crores and sanction of pending scholarships. They alleged that the Government was indifferent to the demands despite the two-month long agitation. R. Krishnaiah, president of the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association, and leaders of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes addressed the protestors, according to a press release.

Counselling postponed

HYDERABAD: The counselling for admission into B. Pharmacy and Biotechnology courses scheduled to commence on Thursday have been postponed in view of the phase II admissions of medical and dental courses. Counselling for B. Pharma and Biotechnology courses will be taken up between October 3 and 6, according to the EAMCET Convenor, G. Ananta Ramu.

Teachers to stage dharna

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation has finalised its agitational programme for finding solutions to the problems facing members. Dharna will be staged in mandals and towns on September 28, 29 and 30, in districts on October 6 and a demonstration in Hyderabad on October 14. The programme was finalised at the two-day conference of the federation held here on September 11 and 12. It put forth demands of teachers such as revival of service rules for panchayat raj teachers, framing of service rules for Girijan schools and provincialisation of services of municipal teachers.

Garment fair a big success

HYDERABAD: Business for Rs.38 crores was transacted during the two-day Sixth Garment Fair organised by the Andhra Pradesh Garment Manufacturer and Wholesalers' Association here on September 11 and 12. Manufacturers from Kolkata, Mumbai, Bellary and Bangalore, besides those from the State displayed their wares at 102 stalls put up at Classic Garden, Balamrai, Secunderabad, according to Amitabh Gupta, secretary of the association.

DD Formation Day celebrations

HYDERABAD: The Doordarshan will continue its mandate of informing, educating and entertaining viewers as well as promoting the national cultural heritage for keeping the age-old traditions alive. Speaking at a special programme in connection with the 45th Doordarshan Formation Day celebrations, the DD Director-General, Navin Kumar, saidit was time to transform the public service broadcasting into public service communication.

He said the Government sanctioned Rs.60 crores for commissioning programmes on works of Indian authors, including stories, novels, plays and children's literature in 22 languages. The cine hero, Jagapathi Babu, who was chief guest, described DD as the family channel with purposeful programmes which commanded the respect of society. A variety of cultural programmes marked the event and they will be telecast on Wednesday.

2 of family killed in land dispute

Kakinada: Two persons -- Lingam Rambabu (16) and Lingam Baburao (60) -- were axed to death and four others injured, two of them critically, when a rival group carrying lethal weapons attacked them at their residence in Panasapadu village, 10 km from here, over a land dispute on Monday. Tension prevailed in the village and additional police forces have been rushed there. According to the police, the bone of contention was over a three-acre mango garden belonging to the Endowment Department along ADB road being enjoyed by one section. The court also upheld the right to one Lingam family, which led to the bloodshed.

Contract employees to protest

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh State Government Contract Employees' Federation will stage dharna before Collectorates on September 15 demanding continuation of mandal extension officers. They will submit memoranda to Collectors. A.V. Nageswara Rao, convener, in a statement issued here on Monday alleged that "injustice" had been done to 6,700 contract MEOs.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Except for very light rain at Anantapur, weather in the State was dry on Monday. There will be no significant change in next two days. According to a forecast isolated rainfall is likely in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Helipads for YSR's visit

NIZAMABAD: The Roads and Buildings (R&B) authorities will arrange helipads at Pothangal, Nizamsagar and Banswada in connection with the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's visit to the district as part of the `Rajiv Palle Bata' on September 19. The Superintendent of Police, N. Madhusudhan Reddy, was reviewing bandobust arrangements with district-level officers at Pragati Bhavan here on Monday in connection with Dr. Reddy's visit. He instructed the police to set up barricades at main junctions and roads to prevent people from surging forward towards the convoy of the Chief Minister. The in-charge Collector, G. Venkatram Reddy, and the Additional SP, K. Koteswar Rao, and other officers were present.

Training programme

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, inaugurated the 10-day special training programme for nodal teachers on eradication of AIDS disease here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, he called upon teachers to play a responsible role in society by educating people about AIDS. Expressing concern over high incidence of HIV positive cases among the youth, he stressed the need to educate schoolchildren about AIDS. The District AIDS nodal officer, Rehana Begum, and others were present.

Madhya Pradesh team's visit

KARIMNAGAR: A team of district Collectors and magistrates of Madhya Pradesh will visit Karimnagar district on Tuesday to study the success of child labour projects in the district. The team will visit Dharoor camp in Jagtial and hold discussions with rehabilitated child labourers at the residential bridge course school and also visit the national child labour special school in Jagtial. Later, they will hold a meeting with the Collector, officials and NGOs of the district.

Exams postponed

WARANGAL: The postgraduate previous and PG diploma examinations of the School of Distance Learning & Continuing Education (SDLCE), Kakatiya University scheduled to begin from September 15 have been postponed. The SDLCE Director, N. Lingamurthy, said the examinations would be held from October 4 to 12. Students were directed to obtain hall tickets two days before the commencement of examinations or one hour before at the respective examination centres.

SFI threatens stir

TIRUPATI: The Students Federation of India (SFI) has threatened to resort to direct action over non-payment of pending scholarships to students in the State. A resolution to this effect was passed at the district SFI meet held here on recently. The district SFI secretary, Reddappa Reddy, said enhancement of mess charges compounded the problem further. With non-release of scholarships students were hard pressed for payment of term fee, bus passes and meeting other requirements. He said scholarships to a tune of about Rs. 32 crores remained unpaid by the Government.
