NAGAPATTINAM, SEPT.13 . Disbursement of loans to farmers through primary agricultural cooperative societies and functioning of fair price shops in this district were reviewed by R.Kannan, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, here on Saturday. Mr. Kannan paid surprise visits to a few societies including the one at Sikkal and reviewed the credit given to farmers and enquired the farmers about getting loans from societies. He directed the officials to speed up disbursement of loans. The Government had allocated a special fund of Rs.20 crores to the central cooperative banks in Thanjavur and Kumbakonam districts for extending credit to farmers. The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, said that maximum credit had been extended to farmers this year for the first time in the last 10 years except during 2001-2002. He said that during 2001-2002 maximum loan was given to the farmers as the Government had waived the interest for the loans. Both the Thanjavur and Kumbakonam central cooperative banks were providing Rs.2 crores of loan to farmers every day and that too quickly to carry out samba paddy cultivation. By repaying the loan quickly or by changing the term of payment, the farmers could avail fresh loans at nine per cent interest.
