CPI cadres arrested

THANJAVUR, SEPT.13. Members of the Communist Party of India staged a demonstration here today demanding immediate and adequate drought relief to farmers, new loans to farmers without any conditions to enable them take up cultivation and protection of groundwater etc.

V.Sivapunniyam, Mannargudi MLA, led the agitation. Chidambaram, district secretary of the party participated.

The police arrested 165 members including women who tried to reach the collectorate for picketing by intercepting them at Anna statue.

Similar demonstrations were held at Kumbakonam and Pattukottai. R. Thirugnanam, Assistant secretary of CPI, Thanjavur district, led the agitation at Kumbakonam while Aranga Chinnappa, State council member, led the agitation at Pattukottai.

Pudukottai

Members of the CPI were held in various parts of the district today when they attempted to picket road.

Police sources said they attempted to picket in front of Pudukottai Sub-Collector's office here and near taluk offices at Alangudi, Aranthangi and Illupur. A total of 180 cadres including 32 women were held.

In Pudukottai, the CPI cadres were led by Padmavathy, member of the party's State-level administrative committee.

Perambalur

In Perambalur district, a total of 227 CPI cadres were held when they attempted to picket in Perambalur, Ariyalur and Jayamkondam today. At Perambalur, they were led by the party's deputy secretary Ulaganathan while in Ariyalur, the agitation was led by the party's vice president Dhandapani.

In Jayamkondam, cadres led by the party's State administrative committee member, Selvaraj, attempted to picket at bazaar.

Karur

The police picked up a total of 114 cadres of the Communist Party of India (CPI), including 13 women, when they staged a demonstration at Karur and Kulithalai today demanding

Those arrested include the party National Council member, A.M. Gopu, at Karur and State Council member and AITUC leader, K.S. Somu, at Kulithalai. The demonstrations were held in front of taluk offices at Karur and Kulithalai.
