Workers die as machine falls

Coimbatore Sept. 13. Two workers were killed when a two-tonne embossing machine loaded on to a mini-truck fell on them. According to the police, Sivakumar (23) and Karthikeyan (28) were engaged in transporting machinery from a footwear-manufacturing unit at KK Pudur in Saibaba Colony. It is learnt that the workers were sitting on the mini-truck holding on the two-tonne embossing machine.

The wheels of the truck got struck in a roadside drain and overturned. In the impact, the machinery is said to have fallen on the duo.

3 killed as van hits tree

KARUR SEPT. 13. Three persons including two women were killed and nine others injured when their van hit a roadside tree at Mayanur near here today. While M. Sundaram (70) of Adinatham near Kulithalai died of the spot, S. Saroja (42), belonging to the same place, was declared brought dead at the Karur Government Hospital. P. Thanga Pillai (48) of Nachalur died after admission there. It is said the van, going to Karur from Tiruchi, went out of control.

Fatal fall

Kancheepuram Sept. 13. Two persons were killed and 12 others injured in a road accident on Paranur bridge near Chengalpattu early this morning. According to the police, around 7 a.m. when the driver of a light commercial vehicle (LCV) going to Namakkal from Chennai tried to overtake a lorry on the Paranur bridge, the drivers lost control and the vehicles fell into the waterway. Anandan (35) of Tambaram Sanatorium in Chennai and Natarajan (45) of Varadampet, Musiri taluk, Tiruchi district, travelling in the LCV, were killed.

Raid on garnet export company

Tirunelveli Sept. 13. A special police team yesterday raided the office premises of a garnet export company at Kuttam near Tiruchendur in connection with the recent arrest of the Radhapuram MLA, M. Appavoo, who allegedly coerced the managing director of another garnet export firm.

The police team picked up three persons from the office, including the manager, Jayakumar, and took them to the Valliyoor station for interrogation.

ST panel member in Chennai

CHENNAI SEPT. 13. V. Sreenivasulu, Member of National Commission for Scheduled Tribe, arrived here today on a five-day visit to the State.

He will meet various representatives of ST organisations in Tamil Nadu and also review the tribal development programmes. Dr. Sreenivasulu has planned to visit the Irular colony in Tiruvallur district on Wednesday and is expected to visit government/public sector undertakings on the unfilled ST quota, false certificate cases on Thursday.

He is also scheduled to meet SC/ST organisations and associations in the State Guest House, Chepauk, on September 17 besides visiting the Jawadhu hill areas.

Government staff take out rally

CHENNAI Sept. 13. State Government employees affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) took out a rally this evening in support of their charter of demands. The employees demanded withdrawal of the Essential Services Maintenance Act and the Tamil Nadu Essential Services Maintenance Act by the State Government, regularisation of noon meal workers, restoration of leave surrender pay, bonus to employees, merger of 50 per cent of the dearness allowance with basic pay and payment of 60 per cent impounded wages with interest to workers.

Earlier, the association organised a meeting to felicitate the employees who were arrested during last year's strike period.

Change in train timings

CHENNAI SEPT. 13. From September 15, the departure timing of train 1082 Kanyakumari-Mumbai CST Express will be revised: It will depart from Kanyakumari at 5.30 a.m. as against the existing timing of 8.40 a.m.

There will be changes in arrival and departure timings of the train at Nagercoil, Thiruvananthapuram, Quilon, Kayankulam, Kottayam, Ernakulam Town, Palghat, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem and Jolarpettai.

There will be no change in timings beyond Jolarpettai, says a railway release.

Re-elected union president

CHENNAI SEPT. 13. The Tamil Nadu Government Officials Union (TNGOU) president, G. Suriyamoorthy, has been re-elected for a third term. According to a union press release, the results for the office-bearers election were announced at Dindigul on September 11. The other office-bearers are: V. Subhash Chandra Bose, M. Jagannathan, M. Sugumar and G. Thilagavathi, vice-presidents; G. Seetharaman, treasurer; R. Radhakrishnan, organising secretary; S.R. Bosco Raj, headquarter secretary; and R. Shanmugarajan, propaganda secretary.

Award for teacher

PERAMBALUR SEPT.13. The headmaster of the Adi Dravida Welfare Middle School in Pasumbalur near here, V. Prakasam, has been selected for the National Best Teacher Award.

The Collector, D. Vivekanandan, honoured him at the Collectorate here today.

He gave away a loan of Rs.20,000 sanctioned under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana by the Ilayur branch of the Canara Bank to A.Arivazhagan to set up silk-loom unit. Velayutham of Veppanthattai got an assistance of Rs.6,250 sanctioned by the Adi Dravida Welfare Department out of Atrocities Relief Fund.

ATM facility

The Indian Overseas Bank, has provided ATM facility at its branch here today and it was inaugurated by Srilasri Shanmugha Desika Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal, head of the Dharumapuram Adheenam, in the presence of K. V. Krishnamurthy, Chief Regional Manager, and G.Jayachandran, Senior Regional Manager of IOB, Nagapattinam.

Later, the bank's fully computerised Thiruvavaduthurai branch was inaugurated by K.V.Krishnamurthy.

Three drown

ERODE SEPt. 13. Three persons drowned in different places on Sunday. According to the police, Jawahar (20) of Gobichettipalayam, a student of a private engineering college, drowned while taking bath in the Bhavani near Kalingiyam.

Suresh (16), an industrial worker, died while taking bath in Thadapalli canal at Singiripalayam near Gobi. In another incident, Ramesh (28), a hosiery worker of Tirupur, drowned in the LBP canal near Kanjikoil.

Plea for water

ERODE SEPt. 13. Farmers of Lower Bhavani ayacut have sought water release into the Kavindapady Velampalayam branch canal for irrigation. Water was released last month in the Lower Bhavani Project canal, but till date, water was not let into the Velampalayam branch canal. Farmers of the area conducted a demonstration on Sunday in Kavindapady seeking water release.

Murdered

ERODE SEPt. 13. A 29-year-old was murdered by a gang of 10 members on Sunday. The police said that Michal Raj of Bharthynagar, Thevur, was sleeping in his house when 10 persons carrying weapons entered the house and beat him up. He was shifted to Erode Government Headquarters Hospital, where he died on Monday. Komarapalayam police have registered a case of murder.

Body found

Dharmapuri Sept. 13. The body of an unidentified man aged around 45 years with signs of mutilation was found at the Hogenakkal falls here on Sunday. The body had been sent for post-mortem, the police said.

Bail plea rejected

TIRUNELVELI SEPT. 13. The bail application of Mani, an advocate who was arrested along with the Radhapuram MLA, M. Appavoo, in a case of criminal intimidation, was rejected today.

The judicial magistrate, I, Jayasingh, rejected the application after the police opposed it.

Mr. Appavoo's bail application is expected to come up for hearing tomorrow.

Man killed

in fire

DINDIGUL SEPT.13. One person was burnt to death and two houses were gutted at Annanagar near Athumedu in Vedasanthur today.

The fire broke out when the deceased, Rasu Pillai, 75, was sleeping in the house owned by Subramanian.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire.

Farmer murdered

TIRUNELVELI SEPT. 13. A farmer was today murdered by an eight-member gang.

The police said S. Muthukutty alias Chelladurai, 48, of Vazhuthoor, recently stabbed Pappa Thevar alias Subbiah of Iluppaikurichi after a petty quarrel. He was arrested and came out on bail. When Muthukutty today went to the Pappakudi police station to sign, he was waylaid by the gang and murdered him, in front of her daughter, Bhanumathi.

The police are on the look-out for the assailants.

Power shutdown
