CHENNAI, SEPT. 13. Communist Party of India volunteers today courted arrest across the State demanding grant of loans to farmers unconditionally, implementation of the food-for-work programme, supply of 30 kg of rice to each family every month during periods of lull in agricultural activity and a permanent solution to the Chennai water problem. The national secretary, D. Raja, who inaugurated the agitation here, said this was the first phase. It would continue until the "anti-people and anti-democratic AIADMK Government goes". The party leaders including the State secretary, R. Nallakannu, and the deputy secretary, S.S. Thiagarajan, attempted to block the road and courted arrest here. A CPI release said the agitation was organised in about 120 centres including district headquarters and major towns. Earlier, addressing the volunteers near the Government Estate here, Mr. Nallakannu said the people in the city were undergoing immense sufferings for lack of adequate supply of drinking water. The Government was yet to implement the desalination project. It should implement the project early. The police said about 15,000 CPI volunteers were picked up all over the State and released later in the evening.
