Concern over influence of TV on children

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, SEPT. 13. Every child has inherent talent in him or her. It is up to parents and elders to identify this talent and give the child all necessary encouragement to hone it, senior Konkani artiste Vasanthi R. Nayak has said.

Participating in "Dialogue programme with Konkani guests," organised by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy here on Monday, Ms. Nayak said that parents should also canalise the creative instincts of their children in the right direction from an early age.

She said that even artistes had their own value and standing in life. Giving the example of Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan, Ms. Nayak said the actor's life was an example as to how even artistes' ruled the hearts of people and added children should be encouraged to think on these lines. She said children of generation next were interested in Indian music and culture. Any child learning any art form of their time also charted a path towards personal bliss.Ms. Nayak expressed concern at the influence television was having on young minds. Noting that most events shown in television soap operas were not fit for Indian drawing rooms, she said parents should take the lead in educating children about repercussions of imitating what they see and hear.

The other guest on the occasion, Meena Rebimbus, echoed most of the sentiments expressed by Ms. Nayak
