GURUVAYANAKERE, SEPT. 13. The Dakshina Kannada Parisarasakta Okkoota and the Nagarika Seva Trust here have opposed the proposed move by the State Government to grant permission to Jindal Company to set up a 500-MW power project at Nandikur in Udupi district at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,838.20 crores. They described the move as over eagerness on part of the Government to invite investors without any thought about its consequences. In a joint press release, M. Bhojappa Gowda and Somanath Nayak, presidents of the Okkoota and Trust respectively, questioned the relevance of the Government to set up the Special Coastal Economic Zone and grant permission to Jindal to set up a thermal plant there. The move came even as protests by elected representatives, environmental organisations and locals were on the rise against a similar move by the Nagarajuna Power Company in the region. Noting that there was ample opportunity to set up gas-based and mini-hydel power projects in the region to mitigate power shortage faced by Karnataka, the organisations said that people of the region would not allow companies to set up thermal plants in the ecologically fragile districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. They warned of protests if the Government granted permission to Jindal. The organisations said that the Government did not have any right to further disturb the livelihood of agricultural labourers and other poorer sections of society, in an effort to woo capitalists. The organisations demanded that the Government withdraw permission to Jindal and warned that it would be responsible for any resultant fallout for failure to do so.
