KANCHEEPURAM, SEPT. 13. The Marumalari Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, Vaiko, today asked the Sivananda Saraswathi Sevashram students to take a vow that they would not leave their parents in old age homes. Addressing the students at the Sevashram, which he visited today to present mats, bed-sheets and sweets to the inmates, Mr. Vaiko said leaving parents in old age homes was against the Tamil culture. Stating that the concept of old age homes reflected the impact of western culture, Mr. Vaiko pointed out that the prime duty of the children was to look after their parents in their old age. The Sevashram general secretary, S. Rajaram said the institution was planning to start a college for women at Maraimalai Nagar and sought reservation for orphans in educational institutions.
