THANJAVUR, SEPT. 13. The commission of enquiry, headed by Justice K. Sampath, retired judge of the Madras High court, began its enquiry into the July 16 school fire at Kumbakonam, at the Collectorate here today. Mr. Justice Sampath recorded evidence tendered by seven teachers and two members of voluntary organisations, which filed an affidavit. All 18 accused including Pulavar Palanisamy, correspondent of the school, and Muthu Palanisamy, Chief Educational Officer, were produced before the judge. Earlier, the judge, along with C.K. Gariyali, Secretary, Municipal Administration, and Gnanadesikan, Secretary, Education, members of an experts committee assisting the commission, visited the school. They also visited Natham from where 13 of the 94 deceased children hailed. They inspected the school run for the surviving children and spoke to the parents of deceased and the injured children. J. Radhakrishnan, Thanjavur Collector, accompanied them. The commission will continue its enquiry tomorrow. Evidence given by 10 persons will be recorded tomorrow.
