15 hurt as bus, tanker collide

MANGALOREBIJAPURSHIMOGAGULBARGA, SEPT. 13.SEPT. 13.SE At least 15 persons suffered minor injuries when a KSRTC Rajahamsa bus (KA 02 B 730) from Bangalore collided with an empty milk tanker at Valachil near Arkula village on Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway 48 near here on Monday. The police said that the bus was going to Mangalore and the tanker was on its way to Puttur. According to a complaint lodged by Muniswamy, cleaner of the tanker, with the Mangalore Rural (Kankanady) police, the accident was caused by rash and negligent driving of the bus driver, who is reportedly absconding.

Ilkal: order on bail plea today

MANGALOREBIJAPURSHIMOGAGULBARGA, SEPT. 13.SEPT. 13.SE The District and Sessions Court, Bagalkot, has reserved its order on the bail plea of 183 accused in the Ilkal violence case for Tuesday. The accused, who have been lodged in Bellary Central Jail since their arrest on August 30, were to be produced in the court today. However, the jail authorities expressed their inability to bring them to Bagalkot, which is 180 km away from Bellary, for want of proper escort. Subsequently the judge exempted the accused from appearing personally before the court. Meanwhile, at Ilkal, the two-day annual "jatra" of Chittargi-Ilkal Vijayamahantha Math began amid tight security.

Private medical college opposed

MANGALOREBIJAPURSHIMOGAGULBARGA, SEPT. 13.SEPT. 13.SE The district unit of the BJP has decided to launch a movement to protest against the setting up of a private medical college in Shimoga. Talking to presspersons here on Monday, the president of the district unit of the BJP, M.B. Bhanu Prakash, said the decision was taken at a meeting of legislators, councillors, and office-bearers of the party held on Saturday. He appealed to the Government to come out with a fresh proposal to start its own medical college here for the benefit of poor and meritorious students. Making it clear that the BJP was not against the establishment of the private medical college, he said what it was opposed to was the Government's preference to the private medical college without taking any initiative to start its own college making proper use of the improved modern infrastructure at the McGann Hospital.

Bar associations call for bandh

MANGALOREBIJAPURSHIMOGAGULBARGA, SEPT. 13.SEPT. 13.SE Members of the Bar associations of Gulbarga, Bidar, and Raichur have called for a bandh in these districts on September 21 demanding a High Court Bench in the Hyderabad Karnataka region. They have also decided to boycott work in taluk and district courts till September 23. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the associations in Gulbarga on Monday.
