`We still travel on village roads'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 13. The Water Resources and Transport Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, has urged the Union Minister of State for Surface Transport, K.H. Muniyappa, to upgrade the district and village roads in Gulbarga, Bidar, Bellary, and Raichur to National Highways.

At a function organised to felicitate Mr. Muniyappa on his becoming a Union Minister, Mr. Kharge said in a lighter vein: "There are national highways all around these districts. But the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and I still travel on village and district roads (both hail from Gulbarga). I request you to ensure that these roads are improved to allow us to come onto the National Highway, to become part of the mainstream," he said.

He congratulated Mr. Muniyappa on becoming a Union Minister and hoped the lawyer-turned-politician would continue to work for the people and put in place people-friendly policies.

Earlier, Mr. Muniyappa stressed that he was aware of the problems in the State. "I have met the Public Works Minister, H.D. Revanna, and other ministers and I assure you that all projects related to roads in the State, will be started in the next one month."

The former Law Minister, D. B. Chandre Gowda, and the former Education Minister, H. Vishwanath, too commended the new Union Minister. But they urged the audience to beware of fundamentalism.

Mr. Chandre Gowda said the "Tiranga Yatra" incident in Hubli while Mr. Vishwanath lamented that young men were now lured into organisations such as the "Bajrang Dal".

"They are from families who flourished under the late Chief Minister, Devaraj Urs. Yet they have forgotten their roots," he said.

Mr. Dharam Singh spoke.

Balagangadharanath Swamy, head of the Adi Chunchunagiri Math, Ramesh Kumar, former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and V. Somanna, MLA, were present.
