MADURAI, SEPT. 13. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, urged all panchayat presidents in the district to emulate A. Thottiyapatti village, which has been adjudged the best village and awarded Rs. 5 lakhs, for improving their areas on all fronts. Speaking at a grievance day function at Rajakoor, near here, he said other villages should take steps to maintain sanitation. Distributing welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 2 lakhs, he said 227 petitions were received at Rajakoor, and 195 petitioners were granted assistance. Fifteen petitions were under consideration, and would be cleared in a week. Seventeen others were rejected for want of proper documents. Development works, at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs, were carried out at Rajakoor during 2003-04, and works costing Rs. 2 lakhs would be launched in 2004-05, he said.
