Tanker lorry runs over pedestrian

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 13. A pedestrian, Ponnamma (59), a resident of Vaiyettumukku, Venjaramoodu was killed after she was hit by a tanker lorry at Vaiyettumukku this afternoon. The body has been kept in the mortuary.

Eight injured

Eight persons were injured when the car in which they were returning after a family trip to Madurai suddenly lost control and fell into a ditch at Theekalluvetti this morning. The injured are Shiraz Khan (38), his wife Shamila (28), their children, Shajuma (9) and Shahul (8); Gopakumar (33), his wife Sunita (31), their children, Aswathy (12) and Ashwin (7). Both families are from Vizhinjam. Shiraz Khan has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital, while the rest have been kept under observation in the casualty wing.

Driver held

The Rural police have arrested the driver of the mini-van involved in the accident that killed four persons, including a pedestrian and three of a family who were travelling on a motorbike, on the National Highway at Thattupalam near Navayikulam in the Kallambalam police station limits near on Sunday.

The arrested person was identified as Sukumaran Nair (41), a resident of Aruvikkara. He was produced before the court on the charges of drunken driving, rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not among to murder.

The victims of the accident included a woman and child. According to police, the lorry lost control and collided with the two-wheeler carrying George Jose, 44, his wife, Lali Jose, 36, and their son, Glen Jose (9).While George Jose and his wife died on the spot, their son succumbed to injuries on the way to the Medical College Hospital.

The lorry then ran over Shamsuddin, 60 who was waiting for a bus by the roadside.
