Doctor's murder solved; three arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 13. Three young men have been arrested on the charge of murdering an elderly doctor whose body was found in his Naraina Vihar house in South-West Delhi on August 7. The police on Monday said the accused murdered the doctor with the intention of robbing him.

Gyan Prakash Batra was found murdered in the drawing room of his house. He lived there alone, while his only son is settled the United States. Enquires revealed that the deceased was a doctor but he had given up his practice in 1992. Lately, he had started lending money. Dr. Batra's wife had passed away in 1994.

The police questioned several people including those employed as domestic help by Dr. Batra. When his son arrived here, he informed the police that two watches and cash to the tune of Rs. 50,000 were missing from the house.

Investigations revealed that after he started money lending business, Dr. Batra used to frequent Inderpuri "jhuggis" for that purpose.

A few days ago, Priyavart, the beat constable of Inderpuri, received a tip-off that a young man, Anoop, residing in that area had recently acquired an imported watch and was also spending lavishly.

Suspecting that he had committed some crime, Priyavart and other police personnel picked up Anoop. During interrogation, he confessed to having murdered Dr. Batra along with three of his accomplices.

At his instance, the police arrested Shambhu and Vinay, from whom they recovered a part of the stolen goods.

Anoop disclosed that his wife had earlier worked at Dr. Batra's residence as a domestic help. He had also borrowed some money from Dr. Batra on interest. Thinking that Dr. Batra would be having huge sums of money in his house, he roped in the other accused, murdered the doctor and took away valuables and cash. The police have launched a hunt for the fourth accused.
