`Tainted' Ministers

Sir, — Dr. Singh's observation at his press conference that `tainted' candidates should be eliminated at the electoral level reflects a misplaced assumption: that political parties can nominate candidates with criminal antecedents and then blame the electorate for electing them. It is the parties that are supposed to be the first line of defence against criminalisation of politics.
