Tiruppur dyers' appeal
COIMBATORE: The Dyers' Association of Tiruppur has appealed to the Centre to reclassify the `sludge' generated from the effluent treatment plants of the textile processing units as `non-hazardous'. In a memorandum to the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, the association President, N. Kandaswamy, has said that hosiery cloth was processed using various dyes and chemicals. During the treatment of effluent, `sludge' was generated and this was classified as `hazardous'. He said the classification was done on the basis of the process called `production or use of dyes, dye intermediates and pigments' and not on the `basis of the nature of the sludge'. Since the sludge was classified as hazardous, the units had to follow stringent and expensive methods for its disposal. This was a `great concern' to the industry, he added. Our Staff Reporter
