Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 14. Women's education holds the key to development, the Lt Governor, M.M. Lakhera, has stressed. Not only would this empower them, but also put the country on the path to progress. Inaugurating the Manavi Sanrakshan Abhiyan Varsh 2004 (project for protection and empowerment of women) organised by Pondicherry State Social Welfare Board under a scheme of the Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB) here today, Mr. Lakhera said that evils like dowry perpetrated against women were a stigma on society. He called for immediate eradication of these evils to ensure speedy development of the nation. Mr. Lakhera said that the role of voluntary organisations in enhancing the status of women in society was crucial. The Government alone could not come up with programmes and schemes for the development of women. Private organisations championing the cause of women should make common cause with the government to improve their lot.
Audiocassette
He also released an audiocassette containing the Tamil version of a song written in Hindi by the Chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board, Mridula Sinha, who addressed the meeting. The Inspector General of Police, Mr P.R. Meena, called for a sustained battle against female foeticide. It was a paradox that female foeticide was seen even among educated people, he said. He pledged that Pondicherry police would always be at the service of voluntary organisations to prevent atrocities against women. Ms. Sinha said that the project evolved by the Board for empowerment of women aimed at preparing the people to campaign against female foeticide. The girl child should be given the right to life, and for this a change in the mindset of the people was necessary.
