VIJAYAWADA, SEPT.14. Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna on Tuesday in protest against the Government's decision to restrict the supply of free power to a section of the farming community. They raised slogans demanding that the Congress Government provide free power to `single-bulb consumers' and review all the power purchase agreements. The activists picketed the APTransco office near Swaraj Maidan for over one hour and raised slogans in favour of free power to all whose power consumption is less than 30 units per month. The CPI (M) city secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, addressing the activists, said the Congress was now going back on its word with regard to free power supply. The subsidy of Rs. 10 to consumers with a consumption of less than 15 units was of little use, he said.
Regularisation
The Congress was also going back on its promise of regularising all unauthorised connections. "The Telugu Desam lost power as it allowed the World Bank to meddle with the Government affairs. He urged the Government to withdraw the proposal to give subsidy and come out with a comprehensive policy on supplying free power to the poor.
