Congress rebuts TDP criticism

HYDERABAD: Congress MLAs -- G. Muddukrishnama Naidu and Sambaiah -- have warned the Telugu Desam against levelling baseless charges against the Congress Government which is sincerely trying to implement its promises.

At a press conference, they countered the TDP accusation that the Congress had already started going back on its election promises. The charges stemmed from the Telugu Desam's anxiety to get back to power even though people had rejected it. The leaders said it was strange that the main Opposition party was judging the performance of the Congress Government in 100 days when people had given it a mandate for five years. The TDP Government had diluted most of its populist promises and it was strange that they were trying to find fault with the Congress Government, said Mr. Muddukrishnama Naidu.

BJP's demand ridiculed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has made light of the demand made by the former Union Minister, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, that the prevailing situation in the State was a fit case for imposition of President's rule.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, R. Anand Bhaskar and Uppala Sharada, spokespersons and Jaganmohan Rao, secretary, said the BJP leaders were unable to digest the Congress coming back to power. The BJP was seeking to make a determined bid to gain a mileage by talking of Telangana Liberation Day on September 17 in which its role was minimal.

Lightning claims girl's life

VIZIANAGARAM: A 15-year-old girl, Killari Chinnammalu, was killed while Seera Gowramma (37) suffered burns when lightning struck them at Sivannapeta in Kurupam mandal on Tuesday. Gowramma was admitted to the Kurupam Primary Health Centre where her condition was stated to be out of danger, according to the Mandal Revenue Officer, Ch. Ramakrishna.

Dacoits decamp with valuables

KARIMNAGAR: Dacoits struck terror at Rangapalli village on the outskirts of Peddapalli town near court buildings and decamped with an almirah containing gold, silver and valuables all worth nearly Rs. 10 lakhs in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the police, 10 dacoits in masks gained entry into the house of K. Laxmi (41) by breaking open the door. The dacoits thrashed the woman and her mother-in-law and snatched away gold ornaments from them and later locked them in a room. The dacoits, who were unable to open the almirah, took away it.

LP-Cet results out

Hyderabad: The Primary Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, has ruled out opening of any new colleges in the State this year for Hindi, Telugu and Urdu language pandit courses.

Speaking to reporters after releasing the LP-Cet 2004-05 results here on Tuesday, she said the Government would open or allow new colleges depending only on the requirement of such teachers.

As many as 36,833 out of 52,687 candidates who attended the LP- Cet passed. The ranks will be despatched to them tomorrow. Counselling for them for allotment of the available 4,030 seats in Telugu, Hindi and Urdu language pandit courses in 64 colleges would begin from November 1.

If candidates found any difficulty in securing rank cards, they could contact the convener of the LP-Cet, office of the Regional Joint Director, School Education, Kacheguda (Phone No: 040-27563104 or 040-55690747).

Burgula remembered

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said here on Tuesday that it was unfortunate that some politicians were trying to divide the State citing backwardness in a region as the sole reason.

Recalling the sacrifice made by Burgula Ramakrishna Rao in stepping down as Chief Minister of the erstwhile Hyderabad State to pave the way for a unified Andhra Pradesh in 1956, he said it was on the linguistic consideration that the present State was carved out. The Congress Government was for integrated development of every backward area as a whole regardless of its location in the State, he said. Dr. Reddy was speaking to reporters after paying homage to Burgula Ramakrishna Rao at his statue here on his 37th death anniversary.

Rasamayi awards

HYDERABAD: Rasamayi, a State-level literary and cultural organisation, will present Dr. Akkineni Life Time Achievement Awards this year to the cine director and artist Bapu, writer Ramana and cine actress Sridevi at Jubilee Hall, Public Gardens, here, on Sunday.

Disclosing this to media persons here on Tuesday, the Rasamayi Founder, M.K. Ramu, said that the organisation had been presenting Akkineni Life Time Achievement Awards for the last five years to prominent film personalities. The day would also see the `Asheethipoorthi Mahotsav'(81st birthday) of Dadasaheb Phalke awardee and Padmabhushan Akkineni Nageswara Rao, he said.

Member of Parliament, N. Janardhan Reddy, would be the chief guest and the School Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, would present awards.

Farmer commits suicide

KARIMNAGAR: A farmer, N. Narsa Reddy (36), committed suicide in his agricultural fields at Upparipeta, a hamlet of Jagtial mandal, last night.

According to the Jagtial SI, P. Prashanth Reddy, the farmer had incurred debts to the tune of Rs. 2.7 lakhs due to crop failure. He is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

boycott meeting

CUDDAPAH: ZPTC and MPTC members boycotted the Chintakommadinne mandal parishad general body meeting on Tuesday demanding declaration of the mandal as drought-affected. The Zilla Parishad Vice-Chairman, P. Ravindranath Reddy, said groundnut crop in 7,000 acres had withered away due to deficient rainfall in kharif season.

Ban on sand

lifting decried

CUDDAPAH: Building construction workers took out a protest rally in Rajampet town on Tuesday demanding lifting of the ban on lifting sand. The AITUC leader, T. Reddaiah, said housing plans of people, particularly the poor, was adversely hit by the ban on sand lifting, besides depriving construction workers of work.

Four injured

in accident

CUDDAPAH: Four persons sustained severe injuries when a lorry carrying a poclain overturned on the ghat road at Guvvalacheruvu in Ramapuram mandal on Tuesday. The injured persons, Satyaraj (19) and Murugan (30), both belonging to Udupadam village in Tamil Nadu, the lorry driver, Fajruddin (45) and Syed Saheb (55), were admitted to Cuddapah Government Hospital. The lorry carrying the poclain was going from Madanapalle in Chittoor district to Kanigiri in Prakasam district.

ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur Club felicitated the present and former cricket players of Andhra and Indian teams at a function held on the club premises on Tuesday. The club secretary, B.M. Gandhi Reddy, honoured V. Chamundeswari Nath, Chairman of BCCI junior selection committee and Andhra Ranji selection committee, M.S.K. Prasad, former Indian wicket-keeper, A.G. Pradeep, captain of India under-17 team, K.V.S.D. Kamaraju and V.S. Prasad, former Ranji players, and Manchu Ferror, president of Anantapur District Cricket Association.

Scribe murdered

KURNOOL: Muralidhar, who worked as part-time reporter for Telugu dailies in the past, was hacked to death at Velugodu in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reporters, the deceased migrated to the place as his wife was working as lecturer in the local Government Degree College. He was alleged to have been harassing sexually another lecturer of the college. The MRPS leader, Kattaiah Madiga, figured as accused in the case. The sub-inspector, Mohammad Baba is investigating the case.

Hindi week

KURNOOL: The NCC Group Commander, Seth, formally inaugurated the Hindi week at Kendriya Vidyalaya here on Tuesday. Col. Seth said Hindi alone had the power to keep this country together. The school principal, Sundari Krishna Murthy, the Hindi pundit, Upendra Singh Tomat, and others were present.

CUDDAPAH: The Medical and Health Department Employees' Union staged a dharna in front of the DM & HO's office demanding regularisation of contract workers and supply of sufficient qualitative medicines to health sub-centres.

Six arrested in

murder case

ANANTAPUR: The Two Town police on Monday arrested six persons accused in the murder case of Kedar Naidu, a follower of the TDP leader, K. Suryapratap Reddy, here on September 7. Four hunting sickles and three country-made bombs were also seized from their possession. According to the police, the arrested persons are -- K. Narayanaswamy, K. Ramasubba Naidu, K. Sridhar Naidu, K. Papa Naidu, P. Mohan Reddy and K. Chandrasekhar Naidu. They were arrested near the Saibaba temple on the Anantapur-Tadipatri road today evening.

Study centre at Kothapally

KARIMNAGAR: The Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice-Chancellor, L. Venugopal Reddy, will inaugurate the university distance education study centre at Kakatiya Institute of Management Studies (KIMS) degree and PG college at Kothapally on the outskirts of Karimnagar town on September 19.

The Nagarjuna university Centre for Distance Education Director, V. Chandra Shekhar Rao, will be present. The study centre, first-of-its-kind in the north Telangana region, will offer PG courses through distance mode.

In a pressnote here on Tuesday, the KIMS college chairman, P. Ravinder Rao, said the distance education centre would offer courses such as M.Sc (botany, zoology, physics, chemistry, micro-biology and mathematics), MBA, M.Com and MA (all subjects).

The study centre will cater students of Karimnagar, Adilabad and Nizamabad districts.

Good response to handloom expo

KARIMNAGAR: The special handloom expo-2004 being organised at Sri Raja Rajeshwara kalyana mandapam in the town is evoking good response with record sales.

The total sales of various handloom products from September 2 to 13 at the exhibition was Rs. 83.25 lakhs. A total of 60 stalls were put up in the exhibition, which would conclude on September 16.

The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, on Tuesday called upon people to purchase handloom products. He hoped that sales would improve further in next two days.

Hanuman chalisa discourse

ADILABAD: The week-long `Sri Hanuman Chalisa saptah gnana yagna' will commence on September 15 at Sri Rani Satiji temple here. Discourses will be given by Anurag Krishna Pathak of Vrindavan between 3.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m., according to a press release.
