ALAPPUZHA, SEPT. 14. Two persons allegedly belonging to a criminal gang, suspected to be behind the theft of sandalwood trees from various parts of the district during the last one year, were arrested by the police here last night. According to the police, a team of led by P.M. Verghese, Circle Inspector, Alappuzha South, took the two persons and an Indica car into custody from Thiruvambady junction here and recovered swords and other tools. The arrested were identified as Prasanth (27), S.S. Bhavan, Mannanthala, Thiruvananthapuram, and Asokan (32), Mulamootil house, Kattanam, Kayamkulam. The arrested confessed to their role in the sandalwood theft in the district during the last one year, the police said. Large number of sandalwood trees worth several lakhs of rupees had been stolen from the Alappuzha Port premises, State Bank of India premises on the Alappuzha beach and from the beach. The police said a search was on to nab the other members of the gang. Binu, a resident of Pazhaveedu here, is suspected to be their leader. His house was raided today and around 15 kg of sandalwood was confiscated, according to the police.
