KURNOOL, SEPT. 14. The Irrigation Secretary, C.V.S.K. Sarma, inspected the Velugodu and Alaganur balancing reservoirs in Kurnool district on Tuesday. Mr. Sarma told reporters at Nandyal that the Telugu Ganga canal would be completed in two years. The project was being speeded up to provide water to the backward areas. Mr. Sarma said the Polavaram project was taken up by allotting Rs.1,320 crores to help divert the Krishna water to backward areas. The Polavaram would stabilise 13 lakh acres under Nagarjuna Sagar project and 22 lakh acres in Krishna delta. In Godavari not even 50 per cent of water was utilised. Mr. Sarma said shutters would be fixed to the Velugodu balancing reservoir with in a week. He denied the charge that the bunds of the reservoir were weak and said the work conformed to the standard specifications.
