Lock for phones Sir, The Telephone Department provides dynamic lock facility to STD lines. But in the wake of introduction of `95' code, long distance calls within the Tamil Nadu circle can also be made without the STD facility. As a result, anyone can make long distance calls without the knowledge of the telephone owner causing him financial loss. The authorities should devise a lock to bar the `95' facility also so that local calls alone can be made from the telephone. It will safeguard the interests of telephone users. R. Jambunathan, Tiruthuraipundi. Post cards in short supply Sir, After shortage of revenue stamps, there is short supply of post cards the poor man's cheaper mode of communication. The authorities should take steps for supplying adequate post cards to all post offices. S. Muthukrishnan, Mayiladuthurai. Train service Sir, The Karur-Podanur railway line (171 km) passes through Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore north. Trains take more time to reach Podanur from Karur than buses. Only four trains are operated between Coimbatore and Karur; their timings are not convenient to many people. I request the authorities to take steps for laying a new broad gauge line between Karur and Podanur via K. Paramathi, Vellakoil, Kangeyam, Pongalur, Palladam, Soolur and Coimbatore East. It would reduce the distance between these two towns by about 50 km. It would also enable operation of trains from Palakkad and Coimbatore East to Karur, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tenkasi, Tuticorin and Nagercoil. It would connect eastern and southern regions of Tamil Nadu to Coimbatore, Mangalore and various regions of Kerala. The track can be used as an alternative route for Coimbatore-Pollachi-Palani-Dindigul MG track to reach Madurai and southern regions. R. Palanisamy, Karur. II
Sir, It is unfortunate that the Railway Minister's assurance to introduce a new train between Kumbakonam and Chennai on BG track via Thanjavur and Tiruchi has not been kept. Extension of the Thanjavur-Tiruchi-Chennai Rockfort Express would only cause hardship to the travelling public of both districts. I request the railway authorities to operate a train from Kumbakonam as per the present Rockfort Express timings and the same could be attached to the Erode-Chennai Express, whose timings have been revised. It would immensely benefit the people of Kumbakonam and Thanjavur. With this arrangement, the railway authorities can satisfy the people of Tiruchi district by allowing them to enjoy the whole complement of the Rockfort Express. Suhail Ahmed Bijli, Thanjavur. III
Sir, Old and sick people and women complain of difficulty in boarding or getting down from trains at the Srirangam railway station while such difficulty is not felt in Chennai Egmore railway station or in Tiruchi Junction. Some of them are even forced to choose the alternative inconvenience of going up to Tiruchi Junction. For, the platform at the Srirangam railway station is not constructed to the required level. Will the railway authorities look into this issue? K.Srinivasan, Tiruchi. IV
Sir, It is quite satisfying that the timings of the Tiruchi-Mangalore Express are revised, and sleeper and A/C coaches attached. It gives a partial reprieve to the long-distance travelling public, bound for Malabar and Mangalore regions, who had a woeful time while travelling during the sweltering day without any reservation facility for quite some years. I thank the railways for being responsive to the genuine demands of the travelling public and addressing the same in right earnestness. V. K. Gopalan, Tiruchi. Court boycott Sir, The decision of the Tiruchi Bar Association to resume work is a good move. Only litigants are affected whenever courts do not function for quite a long time. Representations were placed before appropriate forum and the Supreme Court was seized of the matter. In these circumstances, any representation/ submission before the court hall would yield good result. Instead, any stir on streets would only reduce the dignity of the court and the judicial system of the country. M.Sekaran, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation, Tiruchi.
Tiruthuraipundi.
